Pay It Forward

Pay It Forward is a term first coined by, Robert A. Heinlein, in 1951. The following is an excerpt from his book, Between Planets. It is the basic foundation of the concept of Paying It Forward.

The banker reached into the folds of his gown, pulled out a single credit note. “But eat first – a full belly steadies the judgment. Do me the honor of accepting this as our welcome to the newcomer. “His pride said no; his stomach said YES! Don took it and said, “Uh, thanks! That’s awfully kind of you. I’ll pay it back, first chance.” The banker turned and said, “Instead, pay it forward to some other brother who needs it.”

In most basic terms Paying It Forward is the notion that when one receives a gracious deed, he takes that generosity and passes it onto another who is in need; it is an infinite journey, that is always moving forward. There is no gesture too small. It is our innate notion of community that allows this compassion to exist.

At Yogacara, we believe that there is no time when people should be excluded from practice because of financial restraints. We also know the challenges of new teachers seeking experience in the community. At Yogacara we have a system that allows everyone to give back. Students attend this class by donation of canned goods. They may also wish provide constructive feedback to the teacher, allowing them to grow from this. The teacher provides the service for free. Yogacara will donate $3.00 for every student who attends these sessions to the Vancouver Food Bank.*  This is true Karmic Yoga: giving without expectation of anything in return.

Since the inception of our program (September 2008), Yogacara and its students have donated $1,107 to local charities & 1102 food items to our local Food Bank – With Gratitude!

Yogacara Studio is currently working on the full scope of our Pay It Forward program. Sign-up to our newsletter for updates.

* Yogacara, may from time to time, change the charity to which donations are applied, based on need, time of year etc.

  • Why Yogacara?

At Yogacara we strive to ensure an authentic Yoga practice, and not simply what is trendy. Authentic Yoga focuses on balancing the mind & body, and does not simply focus on the ego & physical appearance. Yoga is considered to be the most ancient physical disciplines; it is a metaphor for balance in every area of life.
